Two 18th-century maps showing Danzig, or Gdansk, Poland, and the 1718 siege of Milazzo, Sicily

[MAPS - EUROPEAN CITIES]

SEUTTER, MATTHAUS. Two maps of European cities, comprising, [Gdansk] Dantiscum f. Gedanum... Augsburg: circa 1730. Hand-colored engraved map. 19 x 22 inches by sight. Framed. Central fold, a few pale spots, not examined out of frame; together with, Milazzo. Olim Myla... Augsburg: circa 1720. Hand-colored engraved map. 19 1/2 x 23 inches by sight. Framed. Central fold, light even toning, two small losses on either side of the fold near the bottom of the map, not examined out of frame.

Seutter's map of Gdansk features a detailed bird's eye view of the city, with its fortifications visible in the foreground and its vital port on the Baltic Sea in the background. His map of the fortress at Milazzo in Sicily depicts the 1718 siege during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. The conflict between Spain and an alliance of Austria, France, Great Britain, and the Dutch Republic was largely sparked by Spanish attempts to regain territories in Italy that it had lost to Austria in earlier treaties.
