The Howard Phipps, Jr. Collection, Erchless, Old Westbury

  • Successful Auction of the Howard Phipps, Jr. Collection, Erchless, Old Westbury on January 28, 2025

  • A Pair of George III Giltwood Mirrors by Francis and John Booker Achieved $118,400

  • Featuring Elegant Furniture and Decorations and Exquisite Asian Works of Art

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle was honored to auction The Howard Phipps, Jr. Collection, Erchless, Old Westbury, on January 28, 2025. The landmark sale saw exeptional results for elegant furniture and decorations and exquisite Asian works of art from Erchless, the historic Phipps estate in Old Westbury.

Highlighting the sale was a pair of Irish George III giltwood mirrors by Francis and John Booker that soared past their estimate of $40,000-60,000 to achieve a stunning $114,800. The circa 1775 mirrors belong to a group of mirrors manufactured by Francis and John Booker of Essex Bridge, Dublin, including three almost identical mirrors in the outer Hall at Skinners Hall, City of London. Francis and John Booker, sons of John Booker (d. 1750), 'Looking-glass manufacturer,' Essex Bridge, was one of two principal glass sellers in Dublin in the third quarter of the 18th century.

Mr. Phipps is the grandson of Henry Phipps, Jr. (1839-1930), the Gilded Age entrepreneur and philanthropist who made a fortune as a partner in Carnegie Steel with his childhood friend and neighbor, Andrew Carnegie. Henry Phipps, Jr. had five children, all of whom owned lavish homes on Long Island’s Gold Coast, including Howard Phipps (1881-1981) and his wife, Harriet Dyer Price Phipps (1901-1981), Mr. Phipps’ parents, who built Erchless in 1936.

Erchless, the Georgian colonial residence named in honor of the Scottish castle frequented by the family, boasted an exceptional collection of Georgian, Irish, and Continental furniture. Like his contemporaries Carnegie, Rockefeller and Morgan, Henry Phipps decorated his elegant home with fine Chinese works of art, acquiring rare dynastic treasures to display within Erchless’ grand halls. The Phipps Asian Art Collection at Erchless provides us a view of how Asian works of art were collected and displayed by the country’s prominent families on the early 20th century.
