NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle’s auction of English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts on January 29, 2025 attracted determined bidders from both sides of the Atlantic. The sale presented an impressive array of exceptional furniture, porcelain, mirrors, clocks, chandeliers, tapestries and rugs from prominent estates and collections.
Leading the sale was a large Flemish tapestry panel that more than doubled its $10,000-20,000, selling for $41,600. Measuring 91 inches by 116 inches, the 16th century tapestry depicted a battle between Franks and Turks before a moated castle, probably from Torquato Tasso's "Jerusalem Delivered" (Gerusalemme Liberata).
Also performing strongly was a Swedish Baroque gilt-lead mounted and cobalt-blue mirror that realized $35,200, many times its estimate of $6,000-8,000. The circa 1720 mirror was attributed to Burchard Precht (1651-1738), a sculptor and cabinet-maker from Bremen. Precht was educated in Hamburg by his brother Christian Precht (1666-1774), and then went to Stockholm in 1674 to work at Drottningholm palace, where he created the Royal bedchamber. In 1681, he was recommended for the position of Royal cabinet maker and sculptor by the royal architect N. Tessin, the Younger. Precht was very influential in his time and was instrumental in disseminating the Swedish baroque style also called the Precht style which had absorbed French and Italian influences.
