The rectangular padded backrest flanked by padded arms with downswept supports, the seatrails carved with paterea and raised on circular fluted tapering legs; front seat at underside inscribed Kaeshammer a Strasbourg, 1786.

François-de-Paule Joseph Kaeshammer (1747-1829) became Maitre in 1771, after training in Paris. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg holds his masterpiece, a casket in the form of a sarcophagus. The current sofa, with it's restrained, high-quality decoration, is characteristic of his work. He introduced this new fashion into Strasbourg production. The reputation of Kaeshammer was such that he developed a clientele well beyond the city, working for the baron de Dietrich, the Bretzenhein palace near Mannheim and the Rohan palace, the imperial residence in 1805.

Overall paintwork of later date, seat rails to underside affected by woodworm, basically in good solid condition, some minor wear to paintwork, could benefit from cleaning, please note that Doyle does not guarantee the condition of upholstery or over-upholstered furniture frames.
