Notes:The firm of Khlebnikov, a distinguished supplier to the Russian Imperial Court and among the foremost silversmiths active in Russia, began producing objects influenced by Chinese design as early as the 1870s. Tea wares were a natural vehicle for such stylistic experimentation, as demonstrated by two tea caddies now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (https://art.thewalters.org/object/44.962; https://art.thewalters.org/object/44.789/).
By the 1880s, Khlebnikov was producing tea and coffee services that more closely emulated Chinese prototypes, though often adapted in a distinctly Russian style. Notable examples include: a silver and champlevé enamel tea service, dated 1884, decorated with birds and flowers (G. Hill, ed., Fabergé and the Russian Master Goldsmiths, New York, 1989, no. 209); a silver and champlevé enamel tea and coffee service, dated 1886–1887, decorated with dragons and flowers, sold at Sotheby’s, London, June 9, 2010, lot 550; and a silver and enamel tea and coffee service, dated 1885, decorated with flowers and butterflies, now in the collection of the Fabergé Museum, St. Petersburg.
