NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts on October 16, 2025 saw international competition drive strong results for furniture, porcelain, mirrors, clocks, chandeliers, tapestries and rugs from prominent estates and collections.
The highlight of the sale was a set of four Louis XV giltwood fauteuils à la reine by Jean-Baptiste Tilliard that sold for $39,680, surpassing their $20,000-30,000 estimate. Tilliard belonged to one of the most important families of French ébénistes of the 18th century. A comparable pair of fauteuils à la reine by Tilliard, featuring similar decoration, is in the Wrightsman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Also performing strongly was an Empire ormolu and patinated bronze portico clock by Jean-Antoine Lépine, circa 1800. Designed in the form of a portico adorned with Egyptian motifs—a style popularized by Napoleon’s campaigns—the clock attracted spirited trans-Atlantic bidding, flying past its $4,000-6,000 estimate to realize $11,520. One of France’s most celebrated clockmakers, Lépine served as Horloger du Roi to Louis XV and Louis XVI, and later supplied Napoleon Bonaparte.
