Swedish Baroque Gilt-Lead Mounted and Cobalt-Blue Mirror, attributed to Burchard Precht

Circa 1720

The rectangular mirror with a shaped curved top surmounted by a central pendant carved with a male mask supporting a flower-filled urn flanked by urns raised on foliate scrolls, the whole set within a glazed beveled and cobalt-blue glass border within a giltwood leaf-cast frame

Height 85 inches (215 cm), width 45 1/2 inches (150.5 cm)

Burchard Precht (1651-1738), sculptor and cabinet-maker from Bremen, was educated in Hamburg by his brother Christian Precht (1666-1774). He then went to Stockholm in 1674 to work at Drottningholm palace, where he created the Royal bedchamber. In 1681, he was recommended for the position of Royal cabinet maker and sculptor by the royal architect N. Tessin, the Younger. Precht was very influential in his time and was instrumental in disseminating the Swedish baroque style also called the Precht style which had absorbed French and Italian influences.

Central upper terminal missing small piece at top, one small pendant at proper right needs repairs, further on central molded mirror plate with crystallization and oxidation, the blue glass surround with minuscule hairline fractures, gilding overall slightly rubbed revealing red bole.
