A German Silver-Gilt Mounted Agate Double Cup

First half 17th century

Of circular shape applied with engraved gilt-silver scrolling foliate borders, each well inlaid at interior with an engraved armorial panel; one cup with interior of foot inlaid with a coin depicting a bearded male mask en profile of Maximillian II, Holy Roman Emperor (1527-1576) and inscribed MAXIMILL II. ROM. IMP SEM AVG; the other cup with interior of foot inlaid with an engraved coin depicting an eagle with wide spread wings supporting an orb and inscribed DOMINUS PROVIDE.B; each raised on knobbed embossed silver-gilt circular foot.

Overall height of double cup 7 inches (17.3 cm), diameter 4 inches (10.2 cm), height of each cup 3 1/2 inches (9 cm)

Avg" translates to "Maximilian, by the Grace of God, Roman Emperor, Always Augustus" in Latin, referring to Maximilian II (1527-1576) the Holy Roman Emperor; "Rom Imp" stands for "Roman Emperor", "Sem" means "always" and "Avg" is short for "Augustus", a title signifying imperial power.
This phrase is a standard Latin inscription found on coins and official documents of the time, signifying the imperial status of the ruler.
