Late Empire Gilt-Bronze Mounted Plum-Pudding Mahogany Mirrored Three-Door Armoire

Estate / Collection: Property of a Chappaqua Collector

Attributed to Marie-Aubin Royer, Second Quarter 19th Century

The accolade-shaped pediment centered by a gilt-bronze figure of a large winged cherub holding a garland and flanked by inlaid gilt-bronze paterae and gilt-bronze acanthus pendants at either side, the frieze mounted wih a continuous border of acanthus and palmettes, all above a mirrored central door flanked by pilasters with Egyptian mask terminals and applied with a scrolled candle arm with a foliate scrolled backplate with palmettes terminals, the arched paneled doors applied with gilt-bronze mounts in the shape of classical maidens wearing swirling robes, the lower part of the doors mounted with cherubs standing on swan-drawn shell-form chariots, all cornered by pilasters with gilt-bronze Corinthian capitals and raised on large gilt-bronze lion paw feet.

Marie-Aubin Royer (circa 1811-1840) was a fine quality furniture maker manufacturing furniture in the Empire style, he supplied various types of furniture to the crown.
