Estate / Collection: The Dalva Brothers Collection
Circa 1760
Depicted as two boys scrabbling together chasing a sparrow, on a circular rockwork base, after a model by Paul-Louis Cyfflé, unmarked.
Height 6 ¼ inches (17.1 cm)
Reference Aileen Dawson, French Porcelain, A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection, London, 1994, p. 255.
For another example, offered as a pair, see Christie's, 21 October 1997, lot 90. This example marked T.D.L. for Terre de Lorraine.
From about 1755 to 1777 Paul-Louis Cyfflé was modeling figures at Luneville. In order to avoid censure and be authorized to manufacture his new fine grained true porcelain, in 1769 he appealed that his paste was not porcelain but ‘pâte de marbre’. There after authorized, he began marking them under the trade name of 'Terre de Lorraine', hence the marks associated with his factory.
