Each depicted seated on a bench, she with a broth bowl resting on her lap, he with one arm outstretched and leaning across to share her soup, on a slab base, she with incised F for Étienne Maurice Falconet, the models by Claude Louis Suzanne after François Boucher.
Height of taller 7 1/2 inches (19 cm)
The two earliest recorded examples of the female figure appear in an inventory of January 1, 1756. Suzanne sculpted the model after a painting by Boucher, see Alexandre Ananoff, François Boucher, 1976, vol. II, no. 414, p. 103. Though obviously conceived to go together, the earliest example of the male figure does not enter the inventories until January 1, 1763, see Tamara Préaud and Antoinette Faÿ Hallé, Porcelaines de Vincennes, Les Origines de Sèvres, exhibition catalogue, Grand Palais, Paris 14 October 1977-16 January 1978, p. 182.
