'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf' Material from the Alan Schneider Collection
Following the success of the Samuel Beckett collection sold last, Doyle was honored to offer material from the collection of Alan Schneider (1917-1984), who directed the premiere of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in October 1962. Highlighting the collection were the director's annotated script for Virginia Woolf? that achieved $21,760, surpassing its $10,000-15,000 estimate, and Schneider's 1963 Best Director Tony Award for Virginia Woolf? that realized $7,680.
'Gone with the Wind' Material Relating to Jack Cosgrove and David O. Selznick
Long before the digital era, special effects pioneer Jack Cosgrove created the epic vistas of Gone with the Wind that still shape Hollywood’s visual memory. Featured in the sale were fascinating lots that highlight Cosgrove’s career and his collaboration with producer David O. Selznick. A rare David O. Selznick presentation screenplay of Gone with the Wind inscribed to Jack Cosgrove sold for $11,520 and a screen-used Empire console from the scene in Gone with the Wind when Scarlett O'Hara rips down the green velvet draperies, which achieved $14,080, surpassing its estimate. 'What a Way to Go!' Original Edith Head Costume Sketches for Shirley MacLaine
The 1964 film What a Way to Go! is a stylish comedy starring Shirley MacLaine and featuring a dazzling array of flamboyant costumes by the legendary designer Edith Head. A highlight of the sale was a group of ten original costume sketches by Head that achieved $10,800. They include some of the film’s most iconic looks: the “Diamond Dress” accessorized with $2.5 million worth of diamonds from Harry Winston, the infamous “Backless Dress,” and the black mourning ensemble from the film’s opening sequence.
