NEW YORK, NY — Doyle’s auction of English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts on October 17, 2024 attracted determined bidders from both sides of the Atlantic. The sale presented an impressive array of exceptional furniture, porcelain, mirrors, clocks, chandeliers, tapestries and rugs from prominent estates and collections.

Tied for top lot were two rare and important survivals that sold for the identical price of $32,000, many times their respective estimates. A circa 1665 Charles II cabinet was covered in stumpwork, silk and metal thread-embroidery depicting flora, fauna and and Biblical scenes. Biblical themes were very popular at this time and were much used in paintings and the decorative arts. Its exceptional state of preservation is likely due to its careful storage in what appears to be its original traveling case. Needlework of this caliber was the pastime of wealthy, aristocratic women and professional embroiderers. Girls were taught sewing skills at an early age, progressing from samplers to much more elaborate needlework, as seen in this cabinet.

Also achieving $32,000 was a colorful Venetian Baroque clear and cobalt glass-mounted mirror from the late 17th/early 18th century. Bidders were attracted by its rectangular form and elaborate decoration of intricate panels, foliate plaques and reverse-painted lozenges, which rarely survive intact.

Additional Categories in the Sale
Special sections of the sale also showcased Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & PrintsThe Collection of Eldo Netto and English & Continental Silver on Oct 16, and Russian Works of Art on Oct 17.
