NEW YORK, NY — Doyle's auction of Russian Works of Art on October 17, 2024 saw international competition drive strong results for a range of exceptional objects dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Among the offerings were Fabergé, enamels, silver, porcelain and icons from American collections and estates.

Highlighting the sale was an exquisite parcel-gilt silver and cloisonné enamel icon of Christ Pantocrator by Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1890, that achieved $108,800, ten times its $8,000-12,000 estimate. The icon was formerly in the collection of Pyotr Nikolayevich, Baron Wrangel, in whose family it has descended to the consignor. Baron Wrangel served in the Imperial Russian Army and during the final phase of the Russian Civil War was commander of the White armies.

Russian porcelains in the sale featured a pair of important gilt-bronze mounted vases from the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in St. Petersburg, circa 1881, that sold for $102,400. The elegant vases were designed by August Spiess, a German-born artist who joined the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in 1849 and remained for 47 years. As chief of sculpture, he designed the majority of the models created at the manufactory. The vases were acquired by the Persian Consul General to Russia prior to 1917 and had descended in the family to the consignor.

Additional Categories in the Sale
