NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful sale in the popular Doyle+Design auction category that saw strong prices and five World Auction Records. This highly-anticipated sale took place on June 8, 2022 and showcased a wide range of Modern and Contemporary furniture, art and design by prominent designers, makers and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

With competitive bidding, the auction totaled a stong $1,125,981 against a pre-sale estimate of $728,450-1,159,950 with a robust 90% sold by lot and 100% by value.

Topping the sale was Dutch artist M.C. Escher's iconic 1938 print Day and Night that surpassed its $30,000-50,000 estimate, achieving $59,850. It is one of the artist’s earliest depictions of a tessellation, or tiling of a plane, inspired by the Moorish tiles he saw during a visit to the Alhambra in Spain in 1926.

Two works by painter Sharon Ellis, Air and Fire from 2002, soared over their estimates of $7,000-9,000 each, realizing a stunning $47,250 and $31,500, respectively. The works employ vivid color to great effect. Based in California’s Yucca Valley, Ellis draws on influences from her environment, as well as Georgia O’Keeffe and Charles Burchfield, creating luminous visions of fantastical landscapes.

Determined competition at the sale set new World Auction Records for five artists -- Ramon Oviedo, Jeanne Reynal, Philip Smith, Joseph Amorotico and Mac Wells.

Highlighting the furniture offerings was an iconic walnut cabinet by George Nakashima featuring a live edge and three pandamus cloth sliding doors that realized $40,950.
