HAMMERSTEIN, OSCAR II Four typed letters signed to Celeste Holm, 1952-56.
[New York:] 20 March 1952; 27 October 1953; 15 February 1954; and 19 December 1956. Single page typed letters signed "Oscar", the final signed in full, on sheets of his personal stationery, 10 x 7 inches, two with manuscripts in lower margin (see note), both fine; Together with two telegrams from Hammerstein to Holm, the first dated 19 October 1943 and mentions a song by Noel Coward; the second is dated 21 February 1952 and relates to the NAACP event mentioned in the letter here.
Three letters from Oscar Hammerstein II to Celeste Holm regarding event performances: the first for the United World Federalists, the second for the NAACP Great Night at Madison Square Garden. Of the first event Ms. Holm has penciled in the lower margin "Nope-working at Persian Room", a nod to her stretch of performances at the Plaza Hotel. Of the second though Hammerstein offers heartfelt thanks but "Nothing that I can say about your performance could be as eloquent as the applause given you by the audience..."
The final two letters thank Ms. Holm for her appearance during a Dial-a-Thon fundraiser and the last for a book of poetry. These letters are testament to the lifelong charitable efforts of Celeste Holm.
