TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX Telegram from studio chairman Joseph Schenck to Celeste Holm congratulating her on her Oscar for Gentleman's Agreement.
Miami Beach: 21 March 1948. Western Union telegram with affixed typed text signed "Joe Schenck", 6 x 8 inches, fine.
Schenck formed 20th Century Fox with Darryl F. Zanuck in 1933 and was its chairman before and after serving time for tax evasion and racketeering stemming from a Chicago mafia related bribery incident in the early 1940s. Schenck served four months in jail during 1946 before being pardoned by President Truman and later was instrumental in discovering Marilyn Monroe. At the time of this telegram he held major influence in Hollywood. Here Schenck writes to Celeste Holm, a rising star of his studio: "My sincere congratulations on award. I am in agreement you are by far the best."
