Lot Details

Lot 239
George Gershwin Portrait of a Lady.
Colored pencil and watercolor on paper, with an affixed signature "George Gershwin" at lower right, sheet 9 1/2 x 10 inches, framed. Fine.
Provenance: Christie's New York, 20 April 1999, Lot 169

A fine, colorful drawing of a young woman by the great composer George Gershwin (1898-1937), who was also an amateur artist of some repute. In his New York Times obituary following his untimely death at just 38, it was written "Mr. Gershwin was a talented painter, and some of his works were placed on exhibition." We trace many examples of Gershwin's works with affixed signatures as here, likely mounted shortly after his death.
