Lot Details

Lot 9
BEACH, REX Original annotated typed manuscript and first edition of The Silver Horde.
New York: 1909. With a title leaf underlined in red and stating "Original Manuscript," an 8 x 10 inch photograph inscribed by Curtis Cooksey (star of the 1920 silent film version) mounted as a frontispiece, the manuscript 310 single typed pages with numerous hand-corrections. Three-quarters red morocco gilt over cloth, the spine tooled and lettered in gilt 11 x 8 1/4 inches. The joints and corners rubbed, edges toned, lightly thumbsoiled. Offered with a first edition copy of the book published by Harper & Brothers in 1909, in original pictorial cloth housed in a cloth slipcase, the front hinge cracked, lightly rubbed.

In 1900, Florida born Rex Beach was drawn to Alaska, where after five years of unsuccessful prospecting he turned to writing, largely in the adventure style of Jack London. His two best known novels, The Spoilers, 1906, and The Silver Horde, 1909, are both set in Alaska. The Silver Horde was twice made into a film, first in 1920 starring Curtis Cooksey (whose inscribed photograph is here mounted as a frontispiece) and again in 1930.
