BYRON, GEORGE GORDON NOEL, LORD Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. A Romanaut.
London: John Murray, 1812-1818. First editions, mixed states. Three volumes. Finely bound in full tan calf gilt, unsigned but a slip laid-in (from Maurice Inman, Inc.) reports the bindings by Riviere, the spines tooled and lettered in gilt with red lettering labels and raised bands, gilt turn-ins, dark purple endpapers, housed in a fitted cloth case. The first volume 10 1/2 x 7 1/8 inches; the balance 8 3/8 x 5 inches; vi, [2], 226 pp., facsimile and ad leaf at end; [iv], 79 pp., ads to verso of final leaf; xiv, [2], 257, [2], [12] pp., the ads dated April 1818. Fine overall, volume I with a few faint scratches to the lower cover and minute wear to the upper joint at head of spine, very clean within but with some spotting, mostly in the final volume, bookplates of Frederick S. Peck.
A very attractive presentation. This copy sold as part of The Library of Frederick S. Peck, Belton Court, Barrington, R.I., 14 November 1944, lot 35.
