London: T. Bensley, 1789. First edition. Finely bound in early full green straight-grained morocco gilt by Lloyd, Wallis & Lloyd, the covers with a foliate border gilt, the spine richly tooled and lettered in gilt with raised bands, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, housed in a full morocco pull-off case by Mounteney. 10 x 7 1/2 inches (25 x 19 cm); 7 engraved plates including the large folding frontispiece view of Selbourne, 2 section titles with engraved vignettes, [viii], 468, [12], [1] pp., retains errata leaf, page 292 numbered 262, and pages 441-442 omitted from the pagination. Minor rubbing to the spine bands but the binding very fine overall, discreet repairs to folding frontispiece, small stain to upper margin of F1, bookplate of Harold Greenhill.

A handsome copy of this important work on natural history which popularized the genre. This copy sold in the Library of the Late Paul Lemperly, Lakewood, Ohio, Parke-Bernet, 4-5 January 1940, lot 1005. Grolier English 62; Rothschild 2550.
