The "Lightning" sailed from Boston for Liverpool on February 18, 1854, while the "Red Jacket" sailed from New York the following day. The outcome of this informal race was followed by everyone in the shipping world. In the end the two clippers arrived in Liverpool on the same day, March 4, with the "Red Jacket" making better time by 18 hours.
