NEW YORK, NY – Following the success of several recent online auctions, Doyle is pleased to offer Americana & Hunting Books from the Estate of Arnold "Jake" Johnson. This expansive auction comprises 285 lots of books and is offered as a timed online-only auction on Doyle.com. Bidding will close on Tuesday, October 1 beginning at 10am EDT.

The public is invited to view the books at Doyle from 10am-5pm on Friday, September 27 and Monday, September 30. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

This auction includes books on the Americas and hunting, including:

A lovely copy of Scraps by Lewis B. France, inscribed to important female fly-tier Mary Orvis Marbury and with two autograph letters laid in.

A signed copy of Elwood Keys’s very rare Moose on the Ottawa.

The scarce Records of a Sporting Commission. H. M. S. Flora, 1898-1901, which was intended only for private circulation and records three and a half years of naval sport in South America, including shooting (both hunting and rifle practice), cricket, football, golf, and regattas.

Manuscript diary describing seven three-week deer hunts in Canada in the years 1897-1902, with a manuscript plan of 1899 camp and an ink-and-pencil map for the 1901 hunt.

First edition of A Hunter's Experiences in the Southern States of America by Captain Flack (1866), describing hunting in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, etc.

The very rare first edition of D. H. Eaton’s Trapshooting. The Patriotic Sport. A book of ready reference, giving a brief history of the sport, its appliances, records, rules, etc., with a foreword by Will Wildwood (1918).

Several titles by Ernest R. Gee, including a carbon typescript for the proposed Derrydale Press reprint of The American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine, which ultimately proved too costly to produce.

The oversized Sapiloe Saga, an apparently unrecorded photographic record of a sporting holiday to the Sea Islands of Georgia.

Rounding out the sale is a large selection of Derrydale Press books, from important authors such as Eugene V. Connett, Frank Forester, Lynn Bogue Hunt, Burton L. Spiller, H. G. Pickering, Ralph Bandini, etc.

Bidding in the timed online-only auction will open on Thursday, Sept 19 and close on Tuesday, Oct 1 beginning at 10am EDT. Lots will close sequentially, one lot per minute, with a soft close. Should any bids be placed in the final minute, bidding will remain open on that lot for one additional minute.

All of the books will be on public exhibition at Doyle from 10am-5pm on Friday, Sept 27 and Monday, Sept 30 by appointment. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

Payment can be made by cash, check, credit card or wire transfer. The final purchase price will include the successful hammer price plus the Buyer’s Premium of 25% and any applicable sales tax.
