Pair of Irish George III Giltwood Mirrors
Circa 1775, by Francis and John Booker

Estate / Collection: The Howard Phipps, Jr. Collection, Erchless, Old Westbury

Each triangular broken pediment centered by an acanthus-wrapped urn above an egg-and-dart carved molding and fluted frieze, over a rectangular mirror plate with a double border, the upper section filled with scrolling foliage flanked by fluted column with Corinthian capitals, the lower frieze with an acanthus clasp flanked by imbricated corbels; the back of one mirror with printed label: Francis & John / Booker / Essex Bridge / DUBLIN.

Height 76 inches (193 cm), width 45 inches (17.7 cm), depth 6 inches (15.3 cm)

These mirror belongs to a group of mirrors manufactured by Francis and John Booker of Essex Bridge, Dublin, including three almost identical mirrors in the outer Hall at Skinners Hall, City of London. Irish, c.1750

Francis and John Booker, sons of John Booker (d. 1750), 'Looking-glass manufacturer,' Essex Bridge, was one of two principal glass sellers in Dublin in the third quarter of the 18th century.
