Auction: Asian Works of Art: Session II, Mar 20, 2024
NEW YORK, NY -- Session II on March 20, 2024 of Doyle's two-day Asian Works of Art auction drew international bidding that drove strong prices for exceptional property. Scheduled during Asia Week New York 2024, the sale showcased porcelains, bronzes, jades, snuff bottles, pottery, scholar’s objects, furniture and paintings from prominent collections and estates.
Furniture in Session II was highlighted by a rare Chinese export secretary bookcase that sold for a stunning $60,800, far over its $3,000-5,000 estimate. Dating to the first half of the 19th century, the elegant bookcase was crafted from precious huanghuali wood and designed with Georgian form and decoration.
Porcelains featured a large and unusual Chinese Yuan-style blue and white porcelain vessel that realized $60,800, surpassing its $20,000-40,000 estimate. Measuring 17 1/4 inches in height, the vessel was raised on three ball-like feet. The unusual form is similar to an example discovered at the Jingdezhen Zhushan Kiln site, and an Iranian bottle with four-lobed body dating to 1100-1200 in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
Bronzes featured an 18th century Tibetan gilt bronze figure of Yama that soared past its $2,000-3,000 estimate to reach $38,400. Measuring 11 inches in height, the bronze portrayed the fearsome figure of Yama standing on a recumbent ox lying on a human figure.
