Each on on fluted ring-turned tapering legs joined by a circular stretcher inset with a compass (with later compass paper), on brass caps and casters, the terrestrial globe with printed dedication inscribed 'To the Rt. Honorable SIR JOSEPH BANKS BART. K.B. President of the Royal Society This new British Terrestrial Globe Containing all the latest Discoveries and Communications, from the most correct and authentic Observations and Surveys, to the year 1799 by Capt. Cook and more recent Navigators. Engraved from an accurate Drawing by Mr. Arrowsmith, geographer, Is respectfully Dedicated by his most obedient hble. servants W. & T.M. Bardin; Additions to 1807'; additionally inscribed 'Manufactured & Sold Wholesale & Retail by W & T. M. Bardin 16 Salisbury Square Fleet Street London.', the celestial globe with printed dedication inscribed 'To the Rev Nevil Maskelyne. D.D.F.R.S Astronomer Royal. Previous restorations to both; celestial globe stand with sunfading, substantial losses to horizon ring and with sunfading, chips to later varnish, inpainting and replacments, small repaired break to top of one support at junction of leg, plugged to juncture below brass support; globe with age cracks, crack extending from Orion through Canis Major to Argo Navis, abrasions, scratches and scuffs, craquelure to varnish, staining, inpainting and losses to surface throughout, later compass paper; terrestrial globe stand with with sunfading, substantial losses to horizon ring and with sunfading, chips to later varnish, inpainting and replacments, small plugged break to one support at junction of bottom support; terrestrial globe with age cracks, repairs and inpainting along and above the equator extending from Borneo to Grenada, later compass paper.

NEW YORK, NY – Doyle's auction on October 16, 2024 drew international competition for Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Prints. Determined bidders on both sides of the Atlantic vied for landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and religious and mythological subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century.

Highlighting the sale was an early 18th century nautical painting by Dutch artist Adriaen van Salm (1660-1720) that achieved $127,500. An exceptional example of “Pen Painting,” the work depicted a fascinating scene of Whalers in the Arctic. To read an essay by Specialist Elaine Stainton, click here.

Old Master drawings featured a beautifully executed rendering in brown ink and wash from the Collection of Eldo Netto depicting Archers in a Landscape that soared past its estimate to realize $32,000 amid speculation that it was possibly by the 17th century French master Claude Lorrain.
