This is a modern copy after an 18th-century monja coronada ("crowned nun") portrait, so named for the elaborate floral crown worn by the nun depicted. The sitters in these paintings are shown with such articles as candles, religious badges, rings, flowers, and other objects to celebrate the occasion when the young woman depicted officially entered a convent as a professed nun. The original version of this work, painted in 1777, is in the Museo Nacional de Historia, Mexico City.
