Michele Giovanni Marieschi
Italian, 1710-1743
Venetian Capricci: A Pair
Each oil on canvas
14 1/2 x 21 7/8 inches (37 x 55.5 cm)
Like his fellow view-painters Antonio Canaletto and Giovanni Paola Panini, Marieschi began his career as a designer of theatrical sets. That training is clearly visible in his early easel paintings, of which these two architectural fantasies are prime examples. Already at this stage of his career, we can see the expressive, textured brushwork that is one of the signatures of his mature style.
