Charles McKim, Stanford White, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens met as young apprentices while collaborating with architect Henry Hobson Richardson on Boston’s Trinity Church in Copley Square. Following its triumphant reception in 1877 they visited the French Romanesque churches that had so strongly influenced its design, previously known to them only in books. Upon their return the legendary firm McKim, Mead & White was born, architects of the Boston Public Library across the square, while Saint-Gaudens went on to become the most important American sculptor of the post-Civil War era. A rare object uniting three artists on the cusp of fame.
