NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful auction of American Silver on October 9, 2025 showcasing a wide array of silver spanning the 18th through 20th centuries. Featured were notable examples by prominent makers from the colonial period through the modern era.
From the Estate of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt (1912-1999) was a group of sterling silver racing trophies. Highlighting the collection was a Victorian Art Nouveau two-handled trophy by W. G. Connell, London, 1898, that raced past its $1,500-2,500 to finish at $10,880. The trophy was engraved "Richmond Royal Horse Show 1910, Second Prize for Coaching Club Competition, won by Alfred G. Vanderbilt Esq." A leading force in American Thoroughbred racing, Vanderbilt introduced such innovations as the starting gate and photo finish, and went on to serve as chairman of the New York Racing Association (NYRA). Sterling silver flatware also performed exceptionally well, led by a Tiffany & Co. service in the “Lap Over Edge” pattern that achieved $16,640, several times its $4,000-6,000 estimate. A Gorham service in the “Buckingham” pattern and a Lunt service in the “Eloquence” pattern, each estimated at $4,000-6,000, also exceeded expectations and sold for identical price of $8,960.
