BACON, FRANCIS
The Essayes Or, Counsels, Civill and Morall ... With A Table of The Colours, or Apparances of Good and Evill ... Newly enlarged.
London: John Beale, 1639. Contemporary vellum. 7 x 4 3/4 inches (17.5 x 12 cm); [viii], 340, [44] pp., the last section "Of the colours of good and evill, a fragment" has a separate title page"; with period interleaving, but with comparatively few notes. The vellum quite soiled, endpapers lacking, the text toned, some staining to the lower fore-corner at the rear of the book. Bookplate of R. Ashburnham.

This is a copy that survived the suppression of the 1639 Beale edition, which was seized when "his right to the title was disputed and his press taken down, the edition confiscated, and, despite powerful outside interference, he was forced to make submission" (see end note Pforzheimer 29). A1 here is blank, and conjugate with A4 as expected (and as per ESTC). Though we have seen the initial leaf when missing variously described as a portrait or a license leaf, we find no confirmation of this, and the evidence of this copy indicates otherwise. ESTC S100372.
