Willie Nelson's 1973 July 4th Picnic and letters from the Texas Counterculture

Estate / Collection: The Estate of LeGrand Mellon

[WILLIE NELSON] JAY D. MILNER

Archive of 1970s correspondence and artwork from author Jay D. Milner to LeGrand Mellon. An interesting archive of material from the Texas-born Maddogs author Jay D. Miller written around the time of Willie Nelson's famous July 4th Picnic in 1973. Present are three 16 x 11 inch color printed posters for the picnic, with horizontal folds; a color collage dated May 1973 initialed by Milner and presented to LeGrand Mellon, the drawing being a humorous bird-like picture of the "Ed." (i.e. Editor); a pen drawing with color added signed and dated September 1973 providing a Don Quixote-esque imaging of the "Editor," this with a manuscript note to LeGrand on a lined sheet describing the drawing and mentioning that "Willie's next one is Nov. 4 - now that you have a t-shirt you almost have to come as my special mystery guest"; a photograph depicting the wedding of Willie Nelson's longtime drummer Paul English to Helen Diane Cantwell Huddleston on stage at the 1973 picnic, this with a long typed note with manuscript postscript by Milner describing the event "I missed the ceremony, I was cooling off and having a smoke in a Winnebago at the time and didn't hear the bells..."; a typed letter from Milner on Iconoclast stationery to LeGrand "here are a few of my early efforts to get this little paper looking pretty good ... I had you down as a potential subscriber - but I forget how much it is"; a photograph depicting Leon Russell on stage at the 1973 picnic (back when he was using the name Hank Wilson); a five page typed letter signed from Milner to LeGrand Mellon with manuscript post-script; and other items. Some wear and tears from handling but generally well preserved. A highly interesting group of materials worthy of institutional interest and future research.
