Live from New York! Career items from the creator of SNL's Weekend Update

Estate / Collection: The Estate of LeGrand Mellon

[SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE] HERB SARGENT

Saturday Night Live material and other memorabilia from the career of Weekend Update creator Herb Sargent. An archive of interesting ephemera, 1950s-early 2000s. Some wear from handling, soiling, tears, etc. Should be seen. The lot sold as-is.

Saturday Night Live material includes: a red "Saturday Night Live" script holder with Sargent's name at lower right; an 8 x 17 inch printed sign on cardboard reading "More Issues/More Updates" possibly relating to "Weekend Update" but this unconfirmed; a 1978 Saturday Night Live staff list (with Akroyd, Belushi, Curtain, etc.); another red "Saturday Night Live" binder with Sargent's name at lower right, this holding many sheets of typed quotations, this somewhat soiled; an Emmy nomination certificate made out to Herb Sargent for Outstanding Writing in a Variety of Music Program for Saturday Night Live and another made out to Sargent's wife LeGrand Mellon for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program, Saturday Night Live, 1988-89 (Mellon's association with the program in unrecorded); a 1993 script for Alan Zweibel's Bunny Bunny about his relationship with Gilda Radnor; two of Sargent's NBC Memo desk pad; Sargent's NBC ID; two desk name plates; a group of 4 x 6 inch photographs depicting SNL writers and actors in the 1990s such as Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, Jan Hooks, Jon Lovitz, etc.; a copy of an old article with reproduced photo of the early cast; and a copy of the book Saturday Night Live: The First Twenty Years, 1994.

Other career memorabilia includes: a stack of later correspondence including a 1965 typed note signed from Steve Allen, a 1967 typed note signed from Richard Rodgers signed "Dick," a 1981 typed note signed from Stephen Sondheim, a letter from Jack Lemmon, etc; a large group of contact sheets and negatives from Sargent's travels and early performances in the late 1950s; a typed television script for show number 2 of The News is the News dated 22 June 1983, this being a separate show produced by Sargent; a group of typed sketches sent to Sargent by a Thomas Rose in 1990; a folder of old scripts, drafts, notes, and correspondence, mostly from the 1960s; etc.

Archive of Grace Kelly Letters Achieves $165,600!
In 1949, twenty year old Grace Kelly moved into the Barbizon Hotel for Women in Manhattan, seeking out Broadway auditions and paying modeling gigs. In 1956, Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco in one the greatest fairy tale weddings the world had ever seen. In the years between, Kelly starred in stylish Alfred Hitchcock films such as Rear Window and To Catch a Thief and won an Oscar for her performance in The Country Girl. In that first year in New York City, Grace Kelly met Prudence Wise who became a life long friend, personal secretary, and frequent correspondent. Offered is the largest known group of signed handwritten and typed letters, notes, personal photographs of Kelly and her children, and ephemera to come to market. The archive traces Grace Kelly’s remarkable journey from New York to Hollywood to Monaco in her own words in this substantial group of unpublished letters. View Lot
