Estate / Collection: The Margolis Collection

[MEGILLAT ESTHER]
Esther scroll.
Italy, likely Venice: late 17th-early 18th century. Illustrated manuscript on vellum. 6 3/4 inches x 39 1/2 inches (17 cm x 1 meter); written on three membranes, 22 lines arranged in 19 columns, written in Italian square Hebrew script, the text within colored borders at top and bottom containing vignettes illustrating scenes from the story of Esther (i.e. Purim), separated by geometric designs, with intercolumnar floral designs, the last panel inscribed "Bar Moshe, may his Rock protect him." Worn throughout, the first membrane with restorations.

The appearance of the patronymic "bar moshe" (son of Moses) at the tailpiece, suggests the identity of the original owner (or perhaps the scribe), but curiously, there is no corresponding indication of a given first name, as would be expected, elsewhere in the scroll. Sold Sotheby's Tel Aviv, Important Judaica, 25 October 2000, lot 204.

Sold for $12,500
Estimated at $7,000 - $10,000
