Publisher's green cloth with pictorially gilt-stamped boards, gilt lettered and ornamented spine, all edges gilt. 10 1/8 x 7 7/8 inches (25.75 x 20.25 cm); 119, [1] pp., half title, engraved frontispiece map, additional engraved title page, 22 engraved plates, tissue guards. Light rubbing and wear to boards and extremities, a faint stain to upper board, front hinge cracked after half title, a few scattered text leaves lightly toned, occasional pale spotting to plates, old ownership signature to title, nonetheless quite a bright and clean copy.
The present volume provides a wealth of information on Boston's Mount Auburn cemetery, "the first 'rural' cemetery and prototype for many others" (Blanche Linden-Ward, American Landscape Architecture p. 121). The copy contains two additional plates showing monument enclosures in Greenwood Cemetery, not called for in the list of plates. Arts in America B570-1. See Stauffer I, p. 248.
