[PENNSYLVANIA DEUTSCH]
Register or Notarial Records of Christian Lehman. Notary and Tabellion Public in the Province of Pennsylvania Anno Domini 1771
[Manuscript title, with a secondary title in Latin]. Contemporary American reversed calf blind. 12 1/2 x 8 inches (32 x 20 cm); bound volume constituting a notarial register with 286 pp. of printed and manuscript notarial forms, about half in German, about half not completed, dated 1772-1774; annexed to this is a record (about 55 ff.) dated 1785-1823 listing lumber purchases for various buildings (e.g. "A Bill for Fridrick Ax for a Frame Shop"), as well as general purchases of lumber. Binding worn, torn at the head of the spine, but holding; the Latin title detached, with some burn-through from the ink.
Christian Lehman, born 1714, is known to have come from Dresden, and to have died in 1774 (he is recorded as a Notary Public and Conveyancer in contemporary records), so the major portion of this book records provides fair copies of the various legal documents he undertook in the years preceding his death. He clearly specialized (though not to exclusivity) in serving a German clientele. The various documents cover a wide range of legal undertakings. The records of lumber sales appended appears to be written out by an unrelated party in the Doylestown area, a Mr. John Goarley (based on a notation on the front endpaper).
