First edition. 18th century calf overlaid at an early date by sheep, the original spine-title visible through a window. 8 1/8 x 4 5/8 inches (205 x 115 mm); 600 pp., including titles, subscriber list, dedication and preface, 22, [2] pp. with the chronicle and index, the volume II overall title bound at the end. Binding rubbed but sound, minor toning, a few spots but generally fairly fresh, clean tear into text at pp. 459-60 (medical receipts), and a weak area of paper with resulting tear and small losses appears on the last leaf of the sixth letter of The Federalist.
The first magazine appearance of the Constitution of the United States appears on pp. 276-286, and the beginnings (the first six letters) of The Federalist appear on pp. 441-534.
