[MAP - EAST RIVER SHORELINE]
SMITH, EDWIN. Map of the East River Shore from 13th to the 28th Streets, Shewing East Street from 13th to the 28th Streets, as per Ordinance of Common Council Dec.r 31st 1856 and also the Harbour Commissioner's Pier Head Line, from 13th to 17th Streets, & Sea Wall Line from 17th to 23rd Street.
"New York, March 3rd 1862 / Edwin Smith, City Surveyor." Manuscript map in ink on paper, hand colored, later linen backing, 25 5/8 x 21 7/8 inches (65 x 56 cm). Lightly toned, dust soiling, faint creasing, a few closed tears and losses to margins, with a loss effecting one word in the map's title, later pencil annotations to recto and ink annotations to backing. Offered with A Photostat Copy of the Same Survey Map, [circa 1936]. Linen backed. Lightly cockled.

A manuscript survey map of the East River shoreline and surrounding area, showing the city from 12th to 28th street, a proposed new bulkhead (which was built, as the map notes), the contemporary shoreline along East Street, and the location of the island's historic waterfront. The map also includes the names of property owners adjacent to infilled shoreland, including one of Con Edison's predecessors, the Manhattan Gas Light Co., as well as the location of Tompkins Street, which was planned in 1822 and 1826 but was only partially built. The note on the backing explains that a photostat copy of the map was used as an exhibit in a 1936 court case between NY Edison Company and the Corporation of the City of New York, likely Matter of New York Edison Co. v. Maltbie.

Estimated at $300 - $450
