[MOYNIHAN, DANIEL PATRICK]
A group of eleven photographs personally signed and inscribed to Senator Moynihan by various presidents and leading political figures
. In many instances these show the Senator with the president in question. Included are Lyndon Baynes Johnson (two photographs); Gerald Ford (two photographs); George Bush Sr. (one photograph); Richard Nixon (two photographs); and William J. Clinton (one photograph). In addition, there are two photographs inscribed by Barry Goldwater to Senator Moynihan, and one from Hilary Rodham Clinton. Occasional minor soiling and light-toning, not examined out of frames.
An American political colossus, Daniel Patrick Moynihan (March 16, 1927 - March 26, 2003) had four successive terms in the Senate, elected 1976, 1982, 1988, and 1994. Previous, he was the United States' ambassador to the United Nations and to India, and was a member of four presidential administrations.
These photographs include a remarkable inscription to Moynihan from Nixon as a "friend, scholar and counselor"; a possibly ironic inscription from LBJ "with the hope that he is enjoying the green pastures;" two photographs of the Senator being sworn-in (with Gerald Ford and George Bush); and an extraordinarily warm inscription from Bill Clinton, under a photograph of the two shaking hands. A unique and remarkable set of mementos of the career of one of the great intellectual figures of American politics in the post-War era.
