Estate / Collection: Collection of a New York Surveyor

[AUCTION MAP - GREENWICH VILLAGE]
BLEEKER & SON, JAMES. Map of Property in the Fifteenth Ward of New York to be Sold by Public Auction at the Merchants Exchange.
[New York]: November 28th, [circa 1827]. Manuscript map in ink, hand colored, paper watermarked "J Whatman / Turkey Hill / 1826," modern linen backing. 17 3/8 x 25 1/4 inches (44 x 64 cm). Dust soiling mostly along right hand edge, a few small stains, closed marginal tears and minor losses at edges, later pencil annotations.

An attractive real estate auction map that shows lots located on 9th and 10th streets just west of Fifth Avenue. The lot on the corner of 9th Street and Fifth Avenue is noted as belonging to Henry Brevoort Junior, and was the location of his stately Greek revival mansion, one of the first in the neighborhood. Brevoort is famous for having accompanied Lewis and Clark on their 1803-1806 voyage to the Pacific Northwest, as well as for his close friendship with Washington Irving - he was partly responsible for the publication of Irving's The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon. There is an illegibly signed 1943 note on this map from a later surveyor reading, "this map does not appear to have ever been filed."

Estimated at $250 - $400
