Estate / Collection: Collection of a New York Surveyor

[AUCTION MAP - GREENWICH VILLAGE]
BLEECKER & SONS, JAMES. Map of Real Estate to be Leased at Auction on Wednesday, March 27th... at the Merch[an]ts Exchange. A Range of Elegant 3 Story new brick Houses built by I. G. Pearson & Others.
[New York]: P. Desobry's Lith., [1833]. Lithographed map on paper, modern linen backing. 17 7/8 x 22 1/4 inches (45.5 x 57 cm). Lightly toned, mild soiling and spotting, creasing, some closed tears and losses, all but one in the margins, pencil and blue crayon annotations.

A real estate auction map advertising properties for lease on what is now Washington Square North, Macdougal Alley, and Eighth Street, between Fifth Avenue and Macdougal Streets. The map dates from 1833, just after these properties were developed. There is an earlier manuscript map by Edwin Smith, also offered in this auction, that shows the same location in 1824, when the land was initially surveyed for John Rogers' three heirs inheritances, before it was developed into the row of three story townhouses that are offered for lease in this map. Surprisingly, many of the townhouses offered in this map are still extant today. The map also shows a portion of the recently created Washington Square Park, as well as the location of the elegant set of townhouses located just to the east of Fifth Avenue, developed by the Sailor's Snug Harbour charity, known as "The Row."

Estimated at $200 - $400
