NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of Coins, Stamps, Bank Notes & Collectibles on July 31, 2024 saw competitive bidding drive strong prices as the sale total far surpassed expectations. Showcased were U.S. and World numismatic and philatelic rarities from collections in the New York area and other regions of the country.

Highlighting the sale was a second offering of rare Iranian stamps, coins and medals that performed exceptionally well. The group was led by two lots of gold and enameled stamps commemorating the 1967 Coronation of the Imperial Couple -- a three-piece set depicting the Imperial couple achieved $15,730, far over its $8,000-10,000 estimate, and a smaller version of the set realized $11,495, more than doubling its $4,000-5,000 estimate. A group of four gold and enamel medallions, including one with a photographic image of the Imperial couple, more than tripled its $3,000-4,000 estimate, selling for $13,310.

High grade United States silver dollars also performed exceptionally well at the sale. From the Property of a Prominent California Collection was a large group lot of Morgan Dollars dating from 1883 into the 20th century, Circulated to Brilliant Uncirculated, that realized $10,890, far exceeding its $5,000-7,500 estimate. A group lot of 1882-S Morgan Dollars, Brilliant Uncirculated, in original wrappers, sold for $6,050, more than double its $1,800-2,500 estimate.

The Philatelic section of the sale was highlighted by an extensive offering from the Collection of Bertrand Comte de Comminges and Mary Allen van Rensselaer Thayer, Paris, by descent to the current consignor. Leading this remarkable collection were German stamps that more than doubled expectations – a group of German Colonies, Offices and Occupation Issues estimated $2,000-3,000 achieved $6,050, and a German States Stamp Group estimated at $1,500-2,000 realized $5,142.
