Joseph Bonaparte, older brother to Napoleon, here thanks an uncertain "Madame" for a visit to her beautiful home and mentions his own household concerns. Bonaparte's home in Bordentown, New Jersey had been destroyed by fire in January 1820 with many possessions lost, and he possibly stayed with the recipient in this interim period.
