JOHNSON, ANDREW
Endorsement signed as President.
Washington: 17 July 1865. An 8-line endorsement in a secretarial hand on a small slip, signed "Andrew Johnson" as President, 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (11.5 x 9 cm). Show through at head of former adhesive on verso, two minor spots.
A rare signature from Johnson signed as "President U.S." on a slip headed "Executive Office/Washington." The slip here refers a matter to the Secretary of War (Edwin Stanton) and it is interesting to note that in 1868 Johnson would attempt to remove Stanton and replace him with General Sherman, and it was his veto of the Tenure of Office Act that led to his impeachment.
