Horse Racing Interest: International Silver Co. Sterling Silver Two-Handled Tray

Collection: From the Estate of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt (1912-1999)

1950s

Rectangular with stylized blossom-form handles, engraved "Sunset Handicap, Hollywood Park, July 23, 1957, 1 5/8 Miles $100,000 Added Won by Find, Owned by Alfred G. Vanderbilt, Trainer W.C. Winfrey, Jockey Ralph Neves Time 2:40." Length 23 1/2 inches, approximately 104 ounces.

Alfred G. Vanderbilt (1912-1999) was a towering figure in American horse racing, whose influence spanned more than seven decades. Born into the storied Vanderbilt family, he inherited Sagamore Farm in Maryland at age 21 and transformed it into one of the nation’s premier breeding and racing operations. His most famous horse, Native Dancer, won 21 of 22 races and became a national sensation (Doyle sold Native Dancer’s Preakness Stakes trophy in May 2018).

Vanderbilt was also a visionary racetrack executive—serving as president of both Belmont Park and Pimlico Race Course (which he owned) —where he pioneered innovations like the photo finish and the starting gate. He orchestrated the legendary 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral at Pimlico, a defining moment in racing history. Vanderbilt returned to the sport after World War II, later chairing the New York Racing Association and earning recognition as “the man who did the most for racing” on four separate occasions.

Alfred G. Vanderbilt’s remarkable gelding Find was a model of endurance and class, racing from age three through eleven and earning over $800,000—making him one of the richest geldings of his era. In 1957, Find had a standout season at Hollywood Park, California, where he captured multiple stakes, including the Inglewood Handicap, the American Handicap, and the Sunset Handicap, a grueling 1⅝-mile test of stamina, for which he won this trophy. That year, Find competed coast to coast, placing in 27 stakes across 15 tracks, and was widely regarded as one of the top handicap horses in the country. His success was yet another testament to Vanderbilt’s Sagamore Farm breeding program.
