Horse Racing Interest: Alphonse La Paglia for International Silver Co. Sterling Silver Punch Bowl

Collection: From the Estate of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt (1912-1999)

1950s

Circular on an openwork ring foot of flowers and scrolls, engraved "Sunset Handicap, Hollywood Park, California, July 23, 1955, 1 5/8 Miles $100,000 Added, Won by Social Outcast, Owned by Alfred G. Vanderbilt, Trainer W.C. Winfrey, Jockey Eric Guerin, Time 2:40:3 - New Track Record". Height 8 inches, diameter 14 inches, approximately 111 ounces.

Alfred G. Vanderbilt (1912-1999) was a towering figure in American horse racing, whose influence spanned more than seven decades. Born into the storied Vanderbilt family, he inherited Sagamore Farm in Maryland at age 21 and transformed it into one of the nation’s premier breeding and racing operations. His most famous horse, Native Dancer, won 21 of 22 races and became a national sensation (Doyle sold Native Dancer’s Preakness Stakes trophy in May 2018).

Vanderbilt was also a visionary racetrack executive—serving as president of both Belmont Park and Pimlico Race Course (which he owned) —where he pioneered innovations like the photo finish and the starting gate. He orchestrated the legendary 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral at Pimlico, a defining moment in racing history. Vanderbilt returned to the sport after World War II, later chairing the New York Racing Association and earning recognition as “the man who did the most for racing” on four separate occasions.

Alfred G. Vanderbilt’s horse Social Outcast was one of the standout American racehorses of the 1950s, known for his durability, consistency, and late-career brilliance. Bred at Vanderbilt’s Sagamore Farm, Social Outcast overcame early setbacks to become a dominant force on the track.

In 1955, he delivered one of his most impressive performances at Hollywood Park, California winning this trophy for the Sunset Handicap in record time for 1⅝ miles. That victory was part of a remarkable season in which he captured seven stakes races across seven different tracks, including Bowie, Belmont, Saratoga, and Garden State. By the end of his career, Social Outcast had earned over $668,000, making him the second-richest gelding in U.S. history at the time of his retirement. His resilience and versatility made him a fan favorite and a worthy inductee into the Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame.
