Collection: From the Estate of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt (1912-1999)
W. G. Connell, London, 1898
The bowl raised on a slender foliate stem, with two upswept loop handles pierced with foliate joins, the flat cover with a female head finial, the body engraved "Richmond Royal Horse Show 1910, Second Prize for Coaching Club Competition, won by Alfred G. Vanderbilt Esq." Height 12 1/2 inches, approximately 34 ounces.
Alfred G. Vanderbilt (1877-1915) was a towering figure in American society known for his devotion to the sport of carriage driving as a member of the New York Coaching Club, and known most famously for driving his coach Venture (now housed at the Breakers in Rhode Island) in the celebrated race from London to Brighton. His involvement with the Richmond Royal Horse Show in England began as early as 1910 when he competed and placed second in the coaching race from Bushy Park to Olympia, driving a perfectly matched four-in-hand team that earned him admiration on both sides of the Atlantic. He returned in later years to triumph in the Coaching Marathon, where his precision and flair were captured in a 1914 silent newsreel immortalizing the harmony between man and horse that defined his legacy.
Tragically, Alfred G. Vanderbilt’s life was cut short in 1915 when he perished aboard the RMS Lusitania. He was widely remembered for his gallantry in the face of disaster, reportedly giving his life jacket to a young mother and child before the ship sank. His death marked the loss of not just a sportsman, but a devoted horseman whose passion for equestrian sport was passed on to his son, Alfred G. Vanderbilt, continuing a family legacy of commitment to equestrian sport.
