  • Auction of A Designer's Eye: Property of Juan Montoya on October 4, 2023
  • Furniture, Decorations and Art from the Collection of the Legendary Designer
  • A World Auction Record for a Sculpture by Helmut Lang

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle was honored to auction A Designer’s Eye: Property from Juan Montoya on October 4, 2023. This landmark sale presented exceptional furniture, decorations and art from the collection of the legendary designer.

A World Auction Record for Helmut Lang
A highlight of the sale was Helmut Lang's group of six untitled pillars -- resin casts made with scraps from his studio, the detritus from a flood that destroyed many rolls of the former designer's fabric. Pivoting in 2005 from a legendary career in fashion, Lang focused on making art and sculpture. This striking sculptural work achieved $28,350. – A World Auction Record for the Artist.

Other works of art that performed strongly were Lucio Fontana’s sculpture Concetto Spaziale, an egg-shaped bronze from 1967 that realized $63,000, surpassing its $30,000-50,000 estimate, and Robert Courtright’s 1994 untitled (Red Collage) work on paper that fetched $16,380, more than doubling its $5,000-7,000 estimate.

Four Roman style marble figural stele estimated $700-1,000 each sold for a combined $18,545 following determined competition. Furniture in the sale was led by a stylish iron and wood console table designed by Juan Montoya that sailed past its $1,000-2,000 estimate to achieve $4,095.
