Collection of papers of a colonial officer in Tanganyika, CE. Wardle. Comprising: an annotated copy of the Staff List, Tanganyika Territory, listing all government officials under the governorship of Sir Donald Charles Cameron, with their responsibilities, salaries and dates of service, folio, paper wrappers, July 1929; seven carbon-copy typescript reports, signed by Wardle in pen and ink (two with corrections), on tsetse-fly reconnaissance safaris and reclamation work, 24 pages, folio, 1929-1930; a copy of the Tsetse Reclamation Annual Report, 4to, paper wrappers, 1928-1929; a copy of What the Governor Might Have Said...Suggested Amendments to the Governor's Speech... July 1930; a folding printed map of Mosul, backed with linen, 13 December 1918; together with a quantity of related material, including copies of official correspondence and instructions (one item relating to the salvage of the Rusinga. with photograph attached), an employment agreement between the Government of the Tanganyika Territory and Wardle (1927), hunting and gun licenses, a pen and ink folding map of the Manyoni District, a blueprint sketch map illustrating fly invasion of the Ndareda-Babati area, and a photographic portrait of Wardle as Brigade Major, [1917]. 29 items in all, loose in modern folding box, morocco spine with gilt lettering, 1917-1932. Some fraying and creasing, occasional marginal ink- and dust-stains.

Esmond Bradley Martin
Esmond Bradley Martin (1941-2018) was educated as a geographer and philosopher. He and his wife Chryssee had an enduring fascination with Africa, and settled in Nairobi, Kenya, in the mid-1970s. He wrote extensively, oftentimes in conjunction with his wife, publishing works including Zanzibar. Tradition and Revolution, Hamish Hamilton, 1978; Cargoes of the east. The ports, trade, and culture of the Arabian Seas and western Indian Ocean, Elm Tree Press, 1978; and many other works on African history and conservation. In the late 1970s, he began extensive research into the illegal trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn, which included substantial stints incognito posing as a buyer of illicit wildlife products. For a while, he served as special envoy for rhino conservation for the United Nations.
For about thirty years, beginning in the mid-1960s, Esmond Bradley Martin assiduously collected books and manuscripts on Africa and its history, acquiring a phenomenal collection of letters by many of the major English explorers of the nineteenth century, as well as numerous rarities from earlier centuries. He was buying at a time when troves of such material surfaced frequently at English auctions. Doyle was privileged to offer the first selection from his collection in the November 7, 2023 auction. We are pleased to present this second offering of property from The Esmond Bradley Martin Collection.
