TENNYSON, ALFRED, Lord. [Timbuctoo, A Poem]. [in] Prolusiones Academiæ Præmiis Annuis Dignatæ... Cambridge: John Smith for the University Press, 1829. First edition of Tennyson's second published work. Publisher's blue paper wrappers, pamphlet-stitched at the spine. 8 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches (21.5 x 13.75 cm); 41, [3] pp. Some fraying to the spine of the wrappers with loss, minor creasing, and other defects, mostly minor, in all a rather good copy, infrequently encountered in wrappers as here. William Harris Arnold's copy, with his small bookplate on the inside of the front wrapper.
Tennyson was too shy to read his prize-winning poem in blank verse aloud in the Senate House, and asked Charles Merivale to undertake the reading of his work as well as Merivale's own Latin poem, also published here. Wise 3.
